Grading
Since we devote a great deal of classroom time and resources to this research project, it will count as 25% of the second quarter grade. As a teacher, I also believe that it is not wise to require students to hand such a large project all at once. (If this project was handed in all at once and a student fails to do so, he/she will have a difficult time passing science.) Therefore, the project is broken into sections that are due at checkpoints. Each section will be graded separately and if a student has not met expectations or deadlines, I will contact a parent or guardian so the problem can be addressed before moving onto the next checkpoint. See the Important Deadlines and Due Dates section of this portal for a list of specific due dates.
Extra Credit
It is extremely worth the additional effort to participate in the Academic Fair. Only students doing an Academic Fair project will be eligible for extra credit. If you decide to publish a three-fold-pamphlet or write a paper as shown in Path C and Path D, you are not eligible for extra credit.
Late or Missing Work
When we begin this research journey, there will be several checkpoints along the way when I will require sections of the project to be completed. A homework grade as well as a portion of your final grade will be entered into my grade book each time we reach a checkpoint. These checkpoints are listed under the deadlines section of this portal and should be reviewed. If a deadline is not met, a zero will be placed in my grade book under homework assignments. Missing assignments, which are required to calculate your final research grade, can be handed in the Monday march 28, 2011 for a late penalty -15% and will not be accepted after that. I will always do my best to notify parents when a deadline is missed. Parents/Guardians of students who fail to hand in a project on the due date will be notified on Friday, February 12.
